TOSHIHIDE, MIGITA
was born in 1863 with the name Toyohiko Migita in Oitaken, Shizuoka
Province and at the age of 17 moved to Tokyo to be a student of
Yoshitoshi. He also studied western style painting under Shinkuro. This
amazing fusion of learning culminated in a large range of woodblock
scenes from classic beautiful women to some extremely advanced
landscapes in the latter years of his life depicting scenes of Meiji era
Japan. These scenes make him a highly desirable inclusion to any
collection of Shin Hanga woodblocks. He lived until 1925.
The
Great Japanese Earthquake of 1924 destroyed many buildings and many
people lost their lives. The fires caused by the quake also took their
toll on the carved woodblocks used to print woodblock prints and many
artists lost their lives' works as the fires destroyed the intricately
carved solid blocks that their scenes could be printed from. Many
started creating new scenes after the earthquake but the talents and
skills of many artists was lost forever as they did not have the stamina
or inspiration to begin again.
THIS SELECTION OF ORIGINAL MIGITA TOSHIHIDE WOODBLOCKS WERE ALL PUBLISHED IN THE EARLY 1920s. THEY ARE A SERIES OF SCENES OF JAPAN IN THE LATE TAISHO ERA, 1913 to 1925 AND, AS WELL AS OFFERING A UNIQUE GLIMPSE OF JAPANESE LIFE AT THE TIME, THEY ARE A RARE SET OF WOODBLOCK PRINTS AS THE CARVED WOODBLOCKS USED TO PRINT THESE SCENES WERE DESTROYED IN THE QUAKE.
INDIVIDUAL PRINT SIZE: 26cm x 19cm (10.2 inches x 7.5 inches) There is some minor variation in sheet sizes for individual woodblocks.
YOSHIDA, TOSHI was
born in Tokyo in 1911. He is the eldest son Hiroshi Yoshida a well
established artist and woodblock print maker of the time. He loved to
paint and was a willing pupil of his father who took him on a drawing
trip to India when he was 19 years old. He has since travelled widely
and always recorded his journeys in artworks and in 1980 he opened a
woodblock print making school in Nagano Province. His work can be found
in many museums and art galleries around the world including The Museums
of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco.
